Mary Elizabeth Keller Scholarship Fund Background

In 1992, Mary Elizabeth Keller discussed the possibility of establishing a scholarship fund with members of the Lorain County Retired Teachers Association (LORCORTA). Criteria for the scholarship were established. The purpose of the Mary Elizabeth Keller Scholarship Fund is to provide scholarship grants annually in the $700-$1000 range to residents of Lorain County and/or graduates of a Lorain county high school. Being a retired teacher herself, a criterion established was that applicants must be preparing for a career in the education profession at any level: pre K through grade 12.

Preference will be given to college juniors or seniors pursuing teacher licensure either full or part time. Those with a bachelor’s degree who are returning to college to obtain Ohio teacher licensure may apply. In 1993, the first two scholarships were awarded.

By May 2020, 107 Mary Elizabeth Keller Scholarships had been awarded. The total amount awarded was $96,325. Scholarship applications are available on line January – March of each year from the LORCORTA web site at www.lorcorta.org. Inquiries can be emailed to keller@lorcorta.org. If preferred, applicants can mail a self addressed stamped envelope to Keller Scholarship, c/o M. Bauer, 2312 Montague Ave., Avon, OH 44011. All applications and supporting credentials must be postmarked by April 1 of each year. Each applicant will be notified before June 1 of each year as to whether he/she received a scholarship.
